2013 Guide Launch

We’ve decided to go back into the official English Riviera guide this year, and we were really pleased to be at the launch yesterday. The new Guide looks brilliant and it’s great to be part of it.

Of course our in-house design team (aka Mr Charles Ryder) was hard at work designing the perfect advert, and now the official guide is out we’d like to show you it via the website too:

If you want a copy of the Guide, you can get one via the English Riviera website.

Christmas Programme

Lots of people have been asking exactly what’s going on at Christmas, so I’m sure you’ll be pleased to hear that our new Christmas programme is out (click on the image for a larger version):

Thank you!

Just wanted to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who came along to our ’20 years at the Cavendish’ night. We certainly had a great time with the buffet and entertainment from Bruce and it was great to see so many friends, family, past and present employees, suppliers, guests and regulars all together. And as for the fireworks, weren’t they brilliant?

The highlight of the evening however was the auction and raffle to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West and we’re delighted that Rosa Marshall of CHSW came in today to pick up the £950 you helped us to raise:

We will post a full list of everyone who donated lots for the auction and raffle as soon as we can. In the meantime, thanks once again and here’s to the next 20 years!

Postcard from 1971

It’s amazing what you find on eBay. While listing some bargains there last week, I found this fantastic postcard of the hotel’s swimming pool from back in 1971:

The Swimming Pool, 1971

It’s surprising how little has changed – the view is almost identical. The terracotta roof at the far end of the pool is still there (though the bar was removed some time in the early 1990s), though there are now steps up to the first floor and there is now access to the gardens from a flight of steps on the right hand side. This photograph of course dates from the time when part of the building formed the old Clarence Court Hotel, so these new features date from when the hotels were amalgamated. Of course I couldn’t resist this bargain little purchase, so I bought the postcard so we could display it in reception. The back of the postcard reads:

A message from 'Willie'

A message from ‘Willie’

‘Having a nice time here the weather and the food is great. I hope it’s as nice for your holidays. Love Willie.’

I’ll keep my eyes out for more and I’ll post details of any more that I find.

Recommend A Friend Offer!

This is a great new offer specially for those of you who have friends coming down to Torbay in the next few weeks. We know friends normally go out for dinner when they haven’t seen one another for a while, so we thought we’d make it extra special and offer you dinner for free!

That’s right – if you recommend us to a friend who stays at the Cavendish any time in May or June*, we’ll offer you all a free dinner in our fabulous restaurant!

There are a couple of conditions: your friend’s stay must be for at least two people for two nights or more and book direct with the hotel on a B&B or half board basis. There is no restriction on the number of people you may recommend, but we will only offer a maximum of two free meals to non-residents in the party. You must also mention this offer at the time of booking.

So come on folks – help spread the word about this great offer and we look forward to seeing you soon.

* Excluding Jubilee weekend 1st-4th June.

Room With A View

We’ve had a busy Easter weekend, and with the NUT conference in town at the Riviera Centre we’ve barely had a quiet moment in the hotel over the last few days. So imagine how delighted we were when one of our guests checked out this morning and presented us with a picture that he has spent the last few days sketching!

The view shows many of the hotels and other buildings in the Croft Road/Shedden Hill area (such as the Allerdale and Applebys/Heritage Hotel), and the trees are on Croft Meadow which the hotel backs on to. The small buidings here belong to Torquay Lawn Tennis Club. The church dominating the hillside is St Lukes, which is clearly visible from all over the Bay.

Our thanks go to Mr Lloyd for cheering up a drizzly Easter Bank Holiday Monday!

More Decorating

Its nearly the end of February and we have been busy again. We are concentrating on bedrooms as this seems to be the area which we need to constantly update. So far this year six rooms have been redecorated and refurbished and more will be tackled each week throughout the year. We are determined to improve the hotel as much as we possibly can, within the financial limits of these difficult times. For those of you who haven’t visited for a couple of years I am sure you will see a vast improvement in both public rooms and bedrooms.

Can I also thank all those repeat guests who keep coming to stay at the hotel. It is so lovely to see so many familiar faces each week.

Happy New Year

We just wanted to wish all of our guests, past and future, a happy and prosperous 2012. We worked really hard to refurbish and redecorate the hotel in 2011 and we are more proud of the Cavendish than ever. We hope to welcome you to our lovely hotel some time this year.
